It All Starts with a Spark
A tool and die maker by trade, Ken Heins founded KLH Industries in 1987 as a wire EDM shop. Even 33 years ago, he knew wire EDM was a unique and game-changing technology for the tool and die industry. As wire EDM began the transition from niche service to commodity, KLH knew we had to continue to find ways to differentiate. To do this, we slowly began adding complimentary services such as waterjet cutting and CNC machining, milling, turning and grinding. This allowed KLH to be a more turnkey provider while still serving those wire EDM only jobs that sparked this business many years ago. Today, with two southeastern Wisconsin facilities, KLH remains firm in its dedication to producing quality life-altering wire EDM projects for the country and world.
EDM Simply Stated
Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM), also referred to as “spark machining,” is the process of using electrical sparks to cut metal. In Wire EDM, a wire (commonly brass) is used as a tool electrode; during this process, an electric current is used to remove excess material and leaves behind a smooth surface without exerting a strong cutting force.
In addition to being able to work within +/- 0.0001” accuracy, Wire EDM’s ability to work with hard materials is incomparable to similar methods such as laser or waterjet cutting. Wire EDM also stands out when it comes to cutting difficult or complex shaped geometries with minimal to no HAZ (Heat Affected Zone).
